What’s It Like to Experience a Hot Flash?

A study performed in 2015 showed that four in five women had experienced a hot flash during their middle age. Though these symptoms lasted around seven years, some participants said they experienced these symptoms for decades.

Though hot flashes aren’t necessarily considered dangerous, they are certainly unpleasant. They usually involve a sudden heat sensation near the upper body that extends into the arms, neck, and face and they may cause a “flushed” look. They tend to last anywhere from a mere thirty seconds to ten minutes or in some cases, even longer. The frequency of these hot flashes varies wildly. Following the hot flash, the body will attempt to cool down, which may lead to sweating, shivers, or feeling cold.

Estrogen levels that fluctuate are a possible reason for triggering hot flashes as they cause blood vessel dilation changes. The onset of menopause can also cause them, along with other symptoms like pains and aches, dryness in the vaginal area, and insomnia.

If hot flashes seem to be happening unusually often, the body may be lacking the proper estrogen levels. Hormone replacement therapy may be a solution to ease the symptoms, and it’s something we would be happy to assist you with.
