What Is a Headache?

A headache is not in the brain. The brain doesn’t have pain receptors. This means that if you are experiencing a headache defined as pain or discomfort in the face/head, pain signals are being sent from the nerves, blood vessels, or muscles in that area of the body.

Headaches are divided into two categories:

  • Primary headaches
  • Secondary headaches

A primary headache is when the headache is the main problem. A secondary headache is a symptom of a deeper problem.

There are many reasons why we experience headaches including stress, anxiety, dehydration, poor sleep, injuries, underlying conditions, and more.

The three main types are:

  • Tension
  • Cluster
  • Migraine

What Is a Migraine?

A migraine is a subset of the general headache category. Migraines are often more severe than general headaches and have four distinct phases.

  • Premonitory stage where you first start to notice a physical change.
  • Aura stage, which is usually accompanied by sensory changes.
  • Headache or the main attack stage when the pain of the migraine is the worst.
  • Postdrome stage which is also the recovery stage

Migraines are more likely to affect women than men and are thought to be triggered by environmental and genetic conditions. This includes things like eating certain foods, hormonal changes, and stress.

What Are the Differences Between a Headache and a Migraine?

The primary difference between a headache and a migraine is that a migraine is usually accompanied by secondary symptoms like light sensitivity, nausea and vomiting. A migraine is also usually more debilitating than a normal tension headache and has four distinct phases.

A migraine is often more severe on one side of the head in contrast to a tension headache which feels like a band of pain or pressure on either side of the head.
