Preventing Periodontal Disease

Find out how you can protect your gums from disease.

Gum disease can cause some serious complications including tooth loss. Luckily, common dental problems like gum disease and decay can be prevented with proper oral care. Our Bolingbrook, IL, dentists Dr. Rani Seeth, Dr. Prabha Singh, and Dr. Manju Suresh want patients to be fully informed about how to prevent gum disease and protect their smiles for life.

Brush twice a day

Everyone should be brushing at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes each time. However, if you really want to protect your smile, try brushing after each meal to remove trapped food particles immediately. The more often you can brush your teeth the healthier your smile will be. Also, don’t forget to brush your tongue where bacteria often lurk.

Floss daily

While this might not be your favorite activity, flossing once a day is crucial for healthy teeth and gums. Even if you do a thorough job of brushing, your toothbrush can’t get in between the teeth as well as floss can. Flossing at least once a day will guarantee that you get the food and plaque that is hiding between your teeth. Not sure you’re flossing properly? Next time you’re at our Bolingbrook, IL, dentistry practice, simply ask our family dentists how it’s done and we’ll be happy to show you!

Rinse with mouthwash

Be sure to rinse a couple of times a day to help reduce plaque buildup that brushing and flossing might have missed using an American Dental Association (ADA) approved fluoridated mouthwash. Also, bring a travel-size mouthwash with you for those times when you don’t have a toothbrush handy.

While maintaining good oral health includes daily brushing and flossing, you still need to see your dentist regularly for routine cleanings and exams. If it’s time for your six-month checkup call our office to schedule your next visit. Annual comprehensive periodontal checkups are also a part of your regular dental visits, so make sure you are coming in regularly to ensure that gum disease doesn’t happen to you.
