Fixing a Broken Braces Bracket

Did you break your braces in Naperville, IL, and can not get to the orthodontist? Dr. Rani Seeth, Dr. Fariha Querishi, and Dr. Matthew Manious offer some tips on how to fix your braces while you wait for your appointment at Dental Pointe Family Dentistry and Orthodontics below:

Assess the damage

Why did your braces break? Knocks in the mouth through sports activity can damage your braces, as well as hard and sticky foods. Your braces are made of metal. This means that the brackets have the potential to cause lacerations in the soft tissue of the mouth. Thus, it is vital to repair your braces as soon as possible at our Naperville office. As always, take care to brush and floss daily to prevent complications from sticky food.

Sharp wire

Take care to cover any sharp edges of the wire with tweezers with dental wax. Perhaps the wire is broken and is protruding from the end of the teeth. If so, cover and fold those ends as well. You can also trim the small pieces of wire to protect from cuts in the mouth. If you need to, try to move the wire to a more comfortable position in your mouth.

Loose brackets

Wire protruding from brackets can interfere with chewing, talking, and other everyday activities. You can cut this wire with a pair of nail clippers, taking care not to swallow the metal. If one of the braces brackets have come off, contact your Naperville orthodontist as soon as possible to have the bracket reinstalled onto the tooth.

Damaged wire

Sometimes dental wire bends because of the consumption of hard foods. They catch onto the wire, pulling it out of place. If the dental wire is pulled way out of place, consult your specialist.
