Answers to Common Endoscopy FAQs

The following are some of the most common questions about the endoscopy procedure.

What exactly is an endoscopy for?

An endoscopy is an examination that uses a camera to view your upper digestive system. When needed, it will also include a biopsy to collect tissue. Your gastroenterologist can use this examination for many things, including determining the cause of any symptoms, diagnosing any issues, and developing a treatment plan. It can also include cutting off polyps, widening your esophagus, and more.

How long will the endoscopy take?

The actual procedure will usually take about 15 minutes. As you receive some form of sedation for the procedure, you’ll be in recovery for about 30 to 45 minutes before being released.

Is it a painful procedure?

You will be sedated during the endoscopy, so you should feel no pain during the procedure. You might have a sore throat after the procedure, though, as the camera and tube are sent through your mouth and throat to view the digestive system.

Can I eat before my procedure?

Do not eat anything for at least eight hours prior to your appointment. In most cases, you should not drink anything for four to eight hours, either. The team at Comprehensive Digestive Institute of Nevada in Henderson or Las Vegas, NV will give you specific instructions about this ahead of time.

Is it okay to brush my teeth before my endoscopy?

You can brush your teeth. However, as you’re not supposed to eat or drink anything for eight hours before your endoscopy, you should be sure you do not swallow any water or toothpaste.

Can I drive after the endoscopy?

The sedation you will be given impacts your ability to fully function for up to a day. Therefore, it's not safe to drive. You will need an adult with you to drive you home, and it’s best to not be alone for the first 24 hours to be safe.

Is it okay to wear dentures during my endoscopy?

There is no reason you cannot wear your dentures to your appointment. When in the treatment room, you will likely be asked to remove them for the procedure to prevent any potential issues. However, you’ll be able to put them back in during recovery.
