What Are Juvederm Fillers and How Do They Work?

Whereas Botox prevents certain muscles from moving, dermal fillers involve the injection of hyaluronic acid or synthetic material beneath the skin, leading to increased volume in those areas. Unlike Botox, these can fill in areas that have lost volume due to the natural aging process.

Dermal fillers can not only be applied to smooth over wrinkles and add fullness to places like the lips and cheeks, but they can also even out indentations such as acne scars or tear troughs. The hyaluronic-based fillers we offer—Juvéderm® and Juvéderm® Voluma™ —can address these issues, with Juvéderm® being more versatile and Voluma™ being used to lift and fill the cheeks and chin specifically.

What Is Getting Juvederm Filler Like?

The procedure itself is very similar to Botox in terms of its duration, feeling, and need for a prior consultation. Numbing creams and anesthetics are also offered to improve your comfort. To avoid inflammation or incorrect filler placement, try to avoid consuming alcohol or scheduling a dentist’s appointment right before treatment.

Afterwards, you may experience some temporary swelling or bruising in the affected regions. Results should be seen 1-2 days after treatment, and can last between 6-12 months for Juvéderm® and up to 2 years for Juvéderm® Voluma™ before the body naturally begins to dissolve the injected material. To avoid additional bruising or shifting the fillers, it would be best to avoid exercising and rubbing the area for a few days after the injections. Otherwise, you can expect little to no downtime.

What to Consider Before Getting  Juvederm Fillers

  1. Juvederm and dermal fillers provide temporary effects depending on the size of dosage. To achieve optimal results, more than one treatment in the future is recommended.
  2. It is not recommended that you get Juvederm when pregnant or breastfeeding
  3. While rare, some potential side effects are:
    • Muscle weakness, drooping eyelid/dry eye (Botox)
    • Infection, rashes, tenderness (dermal fillers)
    • Should any of these side effects persist for more than 24 hours, contact a physician
