Are Foot Problems Hereditary

Are foot problems hereditary ?

Yes, many foot problems are linked to family genetic inheritance. It is more the foot type than the specific foot deformity though that comes from your parents and grandparents. People that have a tendency towards loose flatfeet will develop more problems with heel and arch pain, bunions, and hammertoes. Someone, whose family has more of a high arched foot, can develop more problems with ankle sprains and joint problems. Often we will tell our patients who come in that if a problem is detected in a parent, the children should be checked for the same type of tendency and if we see a child, we usually would ask to see brothers and sisters to check their feet for similar tendencies and conditions.
