Do More Women Have Foot Problems Than Men

In our experience, women do tend to represent approximately 70% of our patients. There are many reasons for this, but the most important reason is the difference in men and women's shoes. Women’s shoes are designed more for fashion than function and therefore often will tend to put the foot in an inappropriate position or squeeze the toes into a small area in the front of the shoe. Men's shoes are made much deeper and wider and with rounder toes which tend to give the foot more room to function and put less pressure on the toes and bones of the feet.

In addition, women who become pregnant will often have a loosening of the ligaments in their feet due to the hormonal influences on the body. This can then lead to changes in their feet after they give birth, thy can have lasting effects and problems when they get shoes in the future.
