What Causes Hammertoes

Hammertoes are one of the most common toe conditions in the foot or ankle that looks like a clenching of the toes. It is due to a muscle imbalance in which the joints of toes are bent into a contracted position. In the early stages, hammertoes are flexible and can be corrected with simple conservative measures. In more advanced cases they may require surgical intervention. This condition can be a genetic deformity or can be due to improper shoe wear. Tight-fitting (either too small or not wide enough) and high-heeled shoes often worsen the condition. Hammertoes can be seen with redness and the development of cons and calluses that may become painful. A hammertoe can also be the result of arthritis, trauma, or breaking of the toe. No matter what the cause we can help! Patients who asked about hammertoes also asked about bunions and bumps on their feet
