When should you bring your daughter for her first GYN visit?

This is a sensitive issue and many mothers aren't sure when to make that first appointment. Usually, between the ages of 13-15 is ideal. It is important that you discuss things like menstruation with your daughter as early as possible. You will need to discuss what products are available to her and how tampons work. We are always here to help out if this is a difficult conversation for you to have. This first visit can be stressful for everyone involved. The more positive you are about it, the better the experience will be for your daughter.

How often should you get a pap smear?

Usually, a pap smear will be performed yearly as part of your annual exam. They typically start at around 21 years of age. Once you are 65 years of age if you have had two normal pap smears in the past 10 years and no serious cancerous results in 20 years, they can stop.

Can I get family planning help?

Yes, your OB-GYN Bloomington, IL can provide the assistance you need to have the family you desire. We can provide birth control and infertility treatment. I have heavy periods. What can I do?

Heavy periods are not just annoying, they can be a health risk. The first step is to determine what is causing the heavy periods. The usual first treatment is hormonal medication. If this doesn't help, there are some surgical options including endometrial ablation which removes a thin layer of the uterine lining. If the cause is uterine fibroids, you may opt to have it removed or have a hysterectomy. This is an option to consider if you are no longer planning to have children.
