What Is Family Planning?

Learn more about your contraception options.

Choosing when or if you start a family is a very personal decision. We understand that everyone has different visions for their future. Whether you want to become a mother in the future (but not quite yet) or you’ve decided that it might not be the path for you, our Bloomington, IL, OBGYNs, Dr. Dele Ogunleye, Dr. Lisa Emm and Dr. Angela Baja, offer a variety of contraceptive methods to support your family planning needs.

Hormonal Birth Control

Hormonal birth control is the most common form of contraception we offer. There are an incredible array of hormonal methods today, and it can often feel daunting for women to choose the right one. That’s where our team can help. Some of the most popular hormonal birth control methods include,

  • The pill
  • The vaginal ring
  • The patch
  • An implant
  • An IUD (only some types contain hormones)
  • An injection

Your lifestyle, health, medical history and other factors may play a role in which birth control method is right for you. During your appointment, we will review your medical history and lifestyle to determine which hormonal birth control option works best for you. Naturally, there are pros and cons to each, which we can also review with you so you can make the most informed decision regarding your health.

Non-Hormonal Birth Control

Hormonal options, or more specifically, birth control pills, are typically what women think of when they think of contraception; however, we also know that hormonal birth control causes adverse side effects for some women. If you’ve been concerned about going back on contraception due to these side effects, rest assured that we do also offer non-hormonal birth control options. One of the most popular ones is the copper IUD. Instead of hormones, this device is placed into the uterus, where it prevents fertilization. How? Copper acts as a spermicide, creating an inhospitable environment for sperm and egg to meet.

You're probably already familiar with other non-hormonal birth control methods such as spermicides, condoms, and diaphragms, and you can easily get these at your local pharmacy. Some women choose cycle syncing as their non-hormonal method of family planning. If you have questions about cycle syncing, our Blooming, IL, OBGYNs would be happy to discuss this with you.

If you’d like to discuss your family planning needs with our Bloomington, IL, OBGYNs, call Advanced Women's Healthcare at (309) 808-3068 to schedule a consultation.
