All About Dental Implants

Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or an entire mouthful of teeth.  The placement of an implant is a multi-part process that generally involves two to three phases to complete the entire procedure. During the first phase, an oral surgeon or dental implant specialist will surgically insert the titanium implant into the jaw bone. After the implantation, the patient will return home to allow for the healing process—a period of time in which the jaw bone and implant must fuse together.

Once the implant is firmly bonded to the jaw bone, usually three to six months later, the patient will return to have the newly created teeth attached to the anchored dental implant. The process is completed when the permanent crown is placed. Your new, restored smile will look, feel and function just like your natural teeth.

Why Dental Implants?

Dental implants are surgically placed in your jawbone, where they serve as the roots of missing teeth.  In general, dental implants may be right for you if you:
  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Have a jawbone that has reached its full growth
  • Have adequate bone to secure the implants, or are able to have a bone graft
  • Have healthy oral tissues
  • Don’t have health conditions that will affect bone healing
  • Are unable or unwilling to wear dentures
  • Want to improve your speech
  • Are willing to commit several months to the process
Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants.  Contact our White Lake family dentist to see if dental implants are an appropriate solution for restoring your smile.  Based on the condition of your oral tissues, oral hygiene, personal habits, and commitment to follow aftercare instructions, your dentist will advise you of the most appropriate dental implant treatment plan.
