What Sinus Surgery Entails

When you need sinus surgery, in Rowlett, Rockwall, Garland, TX you can count on Dr. Brent Metts of North Texas Ear Nose & Throat, a board-certified physician in the practice of Otolaryngology.

Sinus surgery is usually not the first option for the treatment of a variety of conditions. Many people suffer from sinus infections that are usually treated with medication and changes in lifestyle. But once sinus infections become chronic sinusitis and traditional treatments are no longer effective, it is time to consider sinus surgery.

Reasons To Consider Sinus Surgery

Sinus infections may become more serious because of some underlying conditions that may be ongoing in the sinuses.

Sinus polyps

Sinus polyps are benign growths that affect about 20% of those with chronic sinus infections. In most cases, they grow in both nostrils and when they are only on one side they require further investigation as they may be cancerous.

Structural problems

A deviated nasal septum can lead to chronic sinus infections when it blocks one of the nostrils. When the nasal passage can't drain, it leads to infection.

What Sinus Surgery Entails

Dr. Betts uses the latest minimally invasive surgery whenever possible. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and uses an endoscope that goes up through the nostrils rather than making an incision on the exterior of the nose. With general anesthesia, you will need to refrain from eating or drinking, usually from midnight before your surgery. Your surgeon will provide you with instructions to follow about everything you need to do before and after the surgery.

Sinus surgery is usually done as an outpatient operation. The endoscope has a light to make sure everything is visible to the surgeon. When it is over, there will be a short recovery time and then once the anesthesia has worn off, you will be allowed to be taken home, no driving. You can be a little sleepy when it's over. It is normal to suffer from some congestion following sinus surgery, it should not last more than a week or two.

This surgery is performed to remove any obstructions, correct deviations, improve the ability to breathe, and reduce the number of sinus infections.
