What Are 3 Early Warning Signs of Heart Disease?

Woman-with-Heart-Disease

Heart or cardiac disease refers to a wide range of conditions that have the potential to impact the heart and blood vessels. Heart disease typically develops gradually, which is why its symptoms vary and change over time and along a continuum. Dr. Janette Nguye and Dr. Hoan Ngo of the Premier NW Houston Medical Group in Cypress, TX, offer the following guidance about chronic disease management related to the heart and cardiovascular system.

What Are 3 Early Warning Signs of Heart Disease?

It is important to note that the following warning signs may not necessarily be definitive indicators of heart disease—at least not on their own. Still, they are valuable signals that it is time to seek a medical evaluation.

1. Chest Discomfort/Pain

Chest pain, which is also known as Angina, is a common symptom for those who suffer from heart disease. The discomfort may manifest as pain, pressure, burning, fullness, or squeezing. Angina symptoms, which include chest pain/pressure, may also be experienced in the neck, shoulder, back, arm, or jaw. Not all chest pain is symptomatic of heart disease; however, a healthcare professional should check persistent, unexplained discomfort.

2. Shortness of Breath

If you have trouble breathing or catching your breath – when at rest or during activities, it may indicate that the heart is challenged to pump blood efficiently and effectively to the body.

3. Fatigue & Weakness

Chronic tiredness, fatigue, and weakness, even without exerting yourself, can be considered an early sign of heart disease. This is because when the heart is not working efficiently, your body may not get enough oxygen and other nutrients, which causes muscle weakness and overall fatigue.

Remember that the above-noted warning signs are generalized because each person’s experience is unique. This is why chronic disease management is customized to meet each client’s needs. Some people may experience several symptoms, whereas some people may be asymptomatic. It is noted that the following risk factors may increase the likelihood of the development of heart or cardiac issues –

  • One’s Age
  • Familial Medical History
  • History Of Smoking
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • A Sedentary Lifestyle
