Donor sperm is transmitted for a variety of diseases, including syphilis, gonorrhea, hepatitis B and C, HIV and cytomegalovirus.

Some lesbian couples opt for reciprocal IVF, a procedure that involves one partner serving as the carrier for an embryo created by combining the other partner's harvested eggs with donor sperm.
