5 Things To Know Before Starting IVF

Here’s what you should know about IVF.

We understand that choosing whether to get in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or not is a big decision. We also know that our patients are looking for the most effective way to get pregnant. Dr. Minna Selub of Florida Institute for Reproductive Sciences and Technologies in Weston, FL, and serving throughout South Florida and the rest of the state, including the Jacksonville and Tampa areas, can certainly sit down with you to discuss the pros and cons of different fertility treatments, we also know that our patients want all the facts before making such a big decision. Here are five things you should know before jumping into IVF,

It May Require More Than One Try

It’s essential that we provide our patients with realistic expectations regarding IVF before deciding whether IVF is right for them. While there are many individuals and couples who have successfully gotten pregnant with IVF, and on their first shot, we want you to be prepared that you may require multiple IVF sessions to achieve success. During your consultation, ask Dr. Selub what your chances are of success with IVF before deciding if it’s the proper treatment for you.

Make Sure You’re Maintaining Good Health

Before undergoing IVF, you’ll want to make sure that you are in the best health possible. That means eating healthy, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding alcohol, and not smoking. Obesity can impact IVF success, so it’s essential to be in the very best of health physically, mentally, and emotionally before undergoing IVF. You should see our doctor for a comprehensive checkup beforehand to ensure that you're not dealing with any preexisting health problems like diabetes.

Timing is Critical for Success

While we understand that the last thing you want to do is wait, especially when you already feel like you’ve already waited long enough to start a family, we must perform IVF at the right time for its success. If you are going through a period of high stress, such as a move or job change, you should wait until after the stressor has passed to get IVF.

Create a Stable Support System

We know just how much IVF can affect a woman physically and emotionally. So nothing is more important than making sure she is surrounded by a supportive partner, friends, and community that can be there for her when she needs it most. Whether it’s just a listening ear or having someone make dinner for you, having people around you that can help is crucial.

Be Prepared for Work

IVF isn’t a process, and you’ll be an active part of it. For about 10-12 days, you’ll be injecting hormones into your body to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs. Once this is complete, our team will go in and remove the egg (this is performed under general anesthesia). We will then place the embryos into the uterus a few days after the eggs are retrieved. A couple of weeks later, we’ll have you come to take a pregnancy test.
