Allergic Contact Dermatitis From Shin Guards and Flip Flops

The American Contact Dermatitis Society has named a new allergen of the year: Acetophenone Azine which can be found in the foam used to make shin guards, flip flops, and shoe soles.  This allergen can cause a skin reaction on the lower legs, soles, and feet.  Dermatitis in susceptible individuals can still develop even if someone is using a sock underneath the shin guard. It can be avoided by using polyurethane shin guards and leather insoles as alternatives.
