What Is Vein Disease?

To understand disease of the venous system, we need to explore the role of the veins in the body. The veins are the transportation system around the whole body, transferring oxygenated and non-oxygenated blood, waste products, and other nutrients where needed.

Your veins also carry medications and fluids whenever you have an IV administered. As you can see, your vein health is essential. Several things can go wrong with your veins.

  • Chronic venous insufficiency: When veins reach your legs, your body relies on a one-way valve system to use pressure through movement to push the fluids back up your legs to the rest of your body. When this system gets damaged, the veins can’t move fluids from the lower extremities.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Veins form blood clots for various reasons. A DVT can be a severe condition in which the clots break off and go to the lungs.
  • Varicose veins: Stretched-out veins that can cause blood pooling are usually non-threatening but can cause blood clots.
  • Thrombophlebitis: Superficial in appearance and not dealt with, it can become a DVT.

Preventing Venous Issues

The Heart and Vascular Care team in Orlando, Kissimmee, and Orange City, FL, explains that you can help prevent the above issues with these simple tips.

  • Walking at least 30 minutes several times a week helps.
  • Don’t sit or lie too long without moving your legs.
  • Take breaks during traveling, take a walk, and stretch.
  • If you are prone to blood clots, talk to our provider about medication for thinning your blood.
  • Drinking plenty of water and adopting healthy eating habits can prevent clogged veins. Keeping your weight within a healthy limit reduces the stress on your veins.
  • If you notice anything, such as excess fluid in your lower limbs, please call our doctor for a visit to discuss any issues.
  • Warning signs such as hot, red, or hard areas of the legs can be signs of DVT. It would be best if you took these signs that should be taken seriously and followed up with an appointment as soon as possible.
