FAQs About ADHD

Looking to learn more about ADHD in children? Read along below as the team at Pediatric Associates, Inc., in Fort Wayne, IN can help answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the condition, diagnosis, and treatment.

What are the signs of ADHD?

ADHD is short for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which refers to symptoms that fall into the categories of inattentiveness, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. While the actual symptoms can vary, some common ones include:

  • Being forgetful
  • Having a hard time staying organized
  • Fidgeting constantly
  • Talking constantly
  • Being unable to stay on task, listen, or sit still for long
  • Seeming to make careless mistakes

It’s very important to note that if your child is displaying any of these symptoms, it does not mean that ADHD is to blame. Everyone – including adults – can display some or all of the symptoms at some point in life. That’s why a diagnosis requires that your child displays several symptoms for an extended period.

It also requires that these symptoms be displayed in more than one environment. For example, if they only experience them in school or at home, it’s not considered ADHD. It’s more likely due to an issue in the environment itself, such as it being too distracting or maybe even that the work isn’t challenging enough.

Are there options other than medications for treating ADHD?

Medication is just one part of managing ADHD. In fact, it doesn’t actually address the issues – just the symptoms. Behavioral therapy for the children and guidance for the parents as well as lifestyle adaptations, such as learning to maintain a schedule, are key to helping your child succeed in life.

Is ADHD a permanent condition?

ADHD is considered a lifetime condition, though it may vary throughout life. Often, symptoms are worse during childhood and tend to be less impactful during adulthood. There are also times that certain symptoms may not present themselves or become noticeable until later in life – such as if you begin a certain type of job. Regardless, it is a manageable condition.
