Feel Better in your Skin

Tips for Clearing up your Acne

One of the biggest dermatological issues people have to contend with is acne. Although this problem is most often associated with teenagers, people can develop it at any point in their lives. Whether you are going back to school or want to feel more confident on dates, here are some tips to help you attain better-looking skin on your own.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet is good for most than just your skin. If you want to reduce how noticeable your skin’s blemishes are, then you want to limit your consumption of certain foods such as:

  • High-glycemic foods
  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Greasy fast food

There are other foods you’ll want to ensure to include or substitute in your diet. For example, instead of drinking sugary soft drinks, try sipping on green tea instead. Eating produce with Vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and broccoli, can produce a smoother skin texture. Eating salmon and oysters have also shown to improve your skin’s complexion.

Stop Picking the Skin

Many people find it therapeutic to pop pimples. While this will likely not lead to any harm if you only do it once in a while, it can lead to skin damage if you frequently pick and squeeze your skin. Trying to pop a pimple can actually make the issue worse because in some cases, you can accidentally push the debris deeper into the skin, making the blemish worse. This kind of picking and popping can also lead to scarring.

Clean Your Face Each Night

Before you go to bed each night, you should cleanse your face to remove all the excess oil, dirt and makeup. You’ll want to make sure you clean your face after exercising because sweat can get trapped and clog pores, causing breakouts. However, you do not want to cleanse your face more than twice a day. Any more than that and you risk your skin becoming too dry.

Avoid Any “Miracle Cures”

Many over-the-counter products are quite successful at helping people manage blemishes. However, there are no one-size-fits-all cures. Make sure to read the ingredients in every product you put on your skin to ensure it will not exacerbate the issue. When trying new products, test on a small surface to see how your skin will react.

Know When to See a Dermatologist

If you use an over-the-counter product and do not see any results within a few weeks, then we suggest scheduling a consultation with a dermatologist. The longer you wait to see a professional, the more severe the problem will become. There is no need to feel embarrassed or ashamed about seeing a dermatologist. Many people rely on these services, and once your skin clears up, you will likely notice a significant improvement in your mood and mindset.
