Clinical Trials: Am I a Good Candidate?

What is a Clinical Trial?

Dermatological clinical trials are performed to test the safety and efficacy of new prescription products, treatments and devices used to treat various skin conditions. These trials are closely regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory bodies to ensure the safety and reliability of the products being tested.

Since 1990, Windsor Dermatology has been proud to participate in high-quality clinical trials with leading-edge pharmaceutical companies to improve the health of current and future patients. In fact, our experienced team participated in trials for currently FDA-approved drugs such as Enbrel, Humira, Stelara, Otezla, Cosentyx and SILIQ. These clinical trials were all managed through our cutting-edge Psoriasis Treatment Center of Central New Jersey.

If you’re interested in participating in a dermatological clinical trial, we hope that the following information will help you in your decision journey.

Benefits and Risks of Participating in Clinical Trials

Clinical trials offer new, novel treatments for disease states. If you have a medical issue that existing procedures or products are unable to treat, clinical trial participation may help you find a solution that didn’t exist previously. Additionally, clinical trial treatments are provided to participants at no cost, which is one of the greatest benefits to patients. In some cases, patients are even compensated for their time and travel expenses.

From a safety standpoint, a clinical trial will not be held until the product, device or method has been thoroughly tested to ensure utmost safety and efficacy beforehand. In fact, trials are generally the last stage before a new product or treatment is tested in humans. Plus, trial participants are closely monitored throughout the duration of the study, and are subject to routine blood draws, x-rays and other medical assessments by specially trained staff members.

Benefits aside, it is important to note that there are risks associated with clinical trials, the biggest of which is arguably the risk of adverse reactions. That said, any clinical trial candidate who exhibits signs or symptoms of injury or illness will be treated immediately — and every available measure will be taken to restore the candidate’s health.

In addition, clinical trials often involve a significant time commitment, as the overall goal is to develop a safe and effective treatment option for a certain health condition. If you do not have time to spare, a trial may not be right for you.

Eligibility Requirements for Clinical Trials

Not everyone is a good candidate for a dermatology clinical trial. Typically, research centers like to enroll participants who have a severe skin condition that has proven to be difficult, if not impossible, to treat in the past.

If you have a skin condition and are eager to experience relief, you may qualify to participate in an upcoming dermatological clinical trial. At Windsor Dermatology, we are almost always looking to recruit adult and pediatric clinical trial participants who suffer from:
