Varicose or Spider?

There are many people who believe varicose veins and spider veins are the exact same thing. Although they have a lot of similarities, there are differences between the two. It’s important to understand what causes varicose veins and spider veins to develop in the first place. One of the most common reasons people end up with these noticeable veins on their legs is because of genetics. If your mother or father has or had varicose veins and/or spider veins, there’s a good chance you’ll have them at some point in the future as well.

Aside from genetics, you may end up with these veins due to a pregnancy or because you’re often stuck standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Some people notice more trouble with spider veins and varicose veins as they start getting older. It’s one of the several common signs of aging, too. Although both problems are often caused by the same things, there are a few differences between the two that you should know about.

They Don’t Look Exactly the Same

Spider veins are often slightly noticeable in shades of purple, blue, and even red. The color that appears on the skin may vary based on the person’s complexion. These veins are known as spider veins because they appear as random lines on the skin that look a lot like spider webs. While most people get them on the legs and even on the thighs, it’s possible to have spider veins on the face as well.

Unlike the spider veins, varicose veins are a bit larger and tend to stick out. Although similar in color, it’s easier to see the varicose veins on a person’s body because the veins create a bit of a bulge.

Varicose Veins Often Cause Discomfort

Spider veins are often problematic simply because people don’t like the appearance of them. However, varicose veins are a bit more problematic because they can cause some major discomfort. People with varicose veins may experience a throbbing sensation in the legs that causes them to experience a lot of pain when they’re trying to work, drive, or even sleep at night. The discomfort can get in the way of a person’s ability to enjoy life.

Different Treatments Are Offered for These Problems

Spider veins on the legs can be treated using sclerotherapy, which is a very effective outpatient treatment resulting in zero downtime for the patient. It involves the injection of what is typically a salt solution directly into the vein. This irritates the blood vessel lining, causing it to swell and stick together while the blood clots. Laser therapy is also a popular method of treatment for spider veins. Anyone with cosmetic concerns could choose to undergo laser therapy to get rid of the spider veins on their face or on any other parts of the body.

However, laser therapy isn’t ideal for varicose veins. People with varicose veins may want to consider an ambulatory phlebectomy to get rid of them for good. In the meantime, they may get some relief from the discomfort by wearing compressions socks or stocking on their legs.
