What You Need to Know About Back Acne

When most people think of acne, they usually think of blemishes that can appear on different areas of the face, including the cheeks, nose, and forehead. However, there is another form of acne that is just as frustrating as facial acne – it’s back acne. Those who have acne on their back often feel frustrated because the acne is visible when they’re wearing certain types of clothing, including shirts with thin straps and open back ones as well. Aside from being noticeable, back acne may be painful.

Understanding the Cause of Back Acne

Although it’s unfortunate to deal with, it’s important for people to understand why back acne develops in the first place. Once an individual understands the main causes of back acne, they may be able to take the right steps to treat the problem and prevent it. Blemishes on the back may start to appear as the pores become clogged. They may be clogged excess oil from a person’s sweat, forming pustules and cysts. Other causes of back acne can include an excess or moisture or hair gel dripping down the neck to the back. Those who are more prone to facial acne have a greater chance of suffering from back acne.

Treating Back Acne the Right Way

You don’t have to go crazy using a bunch of different products on your back to get some relief. In fact, it’s a good idea to use a gentle cleanser on your body. There are some cleansers designed specifically for people with body acne. In addition to using a gentle cleanser or a cleanser designed to fight acne, you should make sure to shower regularly, paying special attention to your back.

You may use a topical ointment on any back blemishes that are large and painful. Benzoyl peroxide is often effective at reducing inflammation and fighting off bad bacteria, ultimately helping to reduce the size of the blemish at a faster pace. Aside from using a topical ointment, you should watch what you’re wearing on your body. If you’re wearing shirts that are too tight, you may sweat more often, and you could end up dealing with more back acne. Consider wearing shirts that are made of a lightweight and breathable material so that you’re not sweating nearly as much.

If necessary, your dermatologist will provide you with Accutane or some other form of antibiotic in order to properly clear it up. These are more powerful methods of treatment for moderate to severe cases of acne. It is important to speak with your dermatologist about the benefits and side effects that go along with medications.

Watch What You’re Using

Don’t forget to watch what you’re using when cleaning your clothes. If you have sensitive skin, it may be a good idea to use laundry detergent and fabric softener that are specifically made for sensitive skin. If you’re washing your clothes with products that contain harsh ingredients, your skin may have a negative reaction to it, which could lead to more back breakouts than you’d like to deal with.
