Have You Heard of Psoriasis Support Groups?

Psoriasis is a skin condition that can crop up without warning at any time. It is typically caused by stress, depression, and anxiety. Even though psoriasis is not a contagious skin condition, it can lead to embarrassment and discomfort among people who suffer from it. Psoriasis appears on the skin as scaly, red, thick patches. It can be found most commonly on arms, legs, and the neck. This is a lifelong skin condition, which means finding emotional and psychological support is important in handling the emotions that come with it.

National Psoriasis Foundation

The National Psoriasis Foundation was formed in 1968 by people who suffer from the skin condition. The goal of the foundation is to educate the public and those currently living with psoriasis. The foundation also performs research into finding a cure for psoriasis. There are branches of the foundation across the country that provide support groups for people who have the skin condition.

Online Support Groups

If you don’t want to meet with people in-person, you can always look for support groups online. There are thousands of these online groups, or forums, active today. They offer a host of educational resources, support, and anonymity. Anonymity is a big concern of many who suffer from psoriasis as they don’t want people to put a name to a face because of their skin condition.

The Archives of Dermatology published a study in 2009 that found online support groups for people with psoriasis to be very effective. The study also found that nearly half of the respondents said their overall quality of life improved after joining one. Aside from that, 41 percent of respondents said that their symptoms dropped in severity after they joined an online support group for their condition.

Starting a Support Group

If you feel the need to start your own support group, there is a program in place with the National Psoriasis Foundation that can help you get the group off the ground and running. This includes training for anyone interested in doing so, ensuring a successful endeavor.

Many people have started their own support groups due to lack of one in their area or because they feel the need to get involved and help others once they are feeling better. You can begin the process by asking your doctor if there are other people suffering from psoriasis that they know of in your area. You don’t need a lot of people to start the group either, as just a handful can make a difference. Once you start the support group, you can advertise for it at local community centers, medical offices, hospitals, and community bulletin boards.
