Is there one way to treat psoriasis?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all way to treat psoriasis, which means that our East Windsor, NJ, team will need to determine the type of psoriasis you’re dealing with, the severity of the symptoms and your current lifestyle and health status to figure out the best treatment options to fit your needs. This means that you’ll need to come into our office so that we can go over the options that we think will work best for you and your unique health needs.

What are some common ways to treat psoriasis?

The goal of psoriasis treatments is to reduce the number and severity of your flare-ups and prevent joint damage (if you have been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis). Some common ways to treat psoriasis include,

  • Phototherapy: light therapy, or UV therapy, is performed right here in our office and can treat and prevent flare-ups.
  • Topical treatments: topical steroids can often be used to control or treat flare-ups; other topical treatments include retinoids, a synthetic form of vitamin D and coal tar.
  • Injectable treatments: Steroid injections, injectable retinoids and biologics may be prescribed to treat persistent or more severe psoriasis flare-ups.
  • Supplementation: certain vitamins and supplements such as aloe vera and fish oil may provide relief from scaling, itching or inflammation associated with flare-ups
  • Lifestyle modifications: This includes everything from spending short periods in the sun, using a moisturizer every day, taking an oatmeal bath and knowing and avoiding your triggers

I don’t know what triggers my psoriasis?

Trying to figure out what could trigger a flare-up is essential for avoiding those triggers whenever possible. While our East Windsor, NJ, team can help you figure out your triggers, some of the most common ones include,

  • Alcohol consumption
  • Smoking or being around secondhand smoke
