NJ EXPERTS IN TREATING SKIN LESIONS & HIDRADENITIS SUPPURATIVA

Hidradenitis Suppurativa or HS causes inflamed painful and swollen lesions in body areas where hair grows, such as the armpits, groin, anal regions and areas when skin often rubs together including around the breasts. These lesions usually get infected causing pus-filled pockets to form under the skin that eventually turn into hard lumps that produce a constant discharge. Even once the area heals, patients usually experience significant scarring and repeat occurrences. While there is no permanent cure, there are several Hidradenitis Suppurativa treatments that help patients manage the symptoms.

CAUSES & DIAGNOSIS:

HS when hair follicles or sweat glands become blocked by excess keratin. HS usually starts during adolescent years but is often not diagnosed until adulthood once the individual seeks the help of a medical professional. There is no clear-cut reason to why certain individuals experience the condition, but there are a few risk factors that increase your risk, including:

  • Being female
  • Smoking
  • High levels of stress
  • Obesity
  • Hormonal changes

The disease can be diagnosed once a doctor examines the lesions or areas causing pain. You should contact a dermatologist to review the following symptoms:

  • Blackheads that appear in a double-barreled pattern
  • Red bumps filled with fluid
  • Hard, painful lumps under the skin
  • Any seepage of pus from under the skin

MOST COMMON HS TREATMENTS

Dermatologists’ help patients with HS manage the symptoms and prevent reoccurrence with several available treatments.

Medications: Oral and topical antibiotics are often used to treat the infected area, minimize its effect, and prevent reoccurrence.

Corticosteroid Injections: Steroids can be injected into the infected area to alleviate inflammation and swelling.

Surgical Procedures: In those with severe HS, surgery becomes an option to remove the lesions, abscesses, and scarring in the area. Some surgical procedures cut away the infected skin and others drain the area.

Patients can also take steps at home to manage the condition including embracing a healthy lifestyle by focusing on good hygiene in the impacted areas and losing weight. Warm sodium chloride compresses and avoiding tight clothing also help with minimizing the symptoms and managing pain.

While Hidradenitis Suppurativa impacts a small number of individuals, the painful symptoms are often detrimental to their happiness quality of life. Seeking treatment from a professional is the best way to take control of the disease.
