The Cynergy Yag 1064 nm laser targets the superficial veins on the leg. Because these veins are cosmetic in nature and not significant in returning blood to the heart, they can be safely removed to improve the appearance of the legs. As the laser passes through the skin, it is specifically absorbed by the superficial veins, which cause them to shrivel up and go away. Not all veins respond, and multiple treatments may be needed.
In general, sclerotherapy (injections) is the best first option for leg veins (which is a service also offered at the Dermatology and Laser Center of Oklahoma). However, if this treatment fails, you are needle phobic, or you are not willing to wear compression hose, laser therapy is a good alternative.
You will be given goggles for eye protection prior to the procedure. Cold gel will be applied to your skin. During the treatment, cold air is blown onto your skin and the vessels are traced. Patients typically report a cold sensation with some stinginess. Most treatments take 30-45 minutes, depending on the number of vessels being treated. Immediately following treatment, the veins may disappear or turn gray in color. If the veins turn gray, they usually disappear over 2-3 months. Unfortunately, some veins may not respond as well as others. Your skin will be pink for several hours, and rarely, scabs may occur. Uncommon side effects include but are not limited to scarring and depression like grooves on the skin.
Most patients notice improvement with each treatment but are happiest with 2-3 treatments. Genetics plays a significant role, and patients who get leg veins tend to slowly develop more leg veins over a period of years.
We suggest avoiding any sun exposure and sunless tanners for 4 weeks prior to each treatment. It is okay to shave your legs as usual. There are no restrictions on activities following treatment, and compression hose are not required.
Treatment cost depends the size of the area treated, but ranges from $325.00-$525.00 per treatment.
