What is Adult Failure to Thrive?

Adult failure to thrive, often abbreviated as AFTT, is a condition in which an individual exhibits an overall decline in the ability to function. Adult failure to thrive is also associated with inactivity, depression, poor nutrition, and weight loss, among other symptoms. Dr. Antoine Geffrard, the experienced physician at RMS Consultations in Southfield, MI, can develop an individualized treatment program that includes appropriate interventions and therapies to help reverse the decline in function.

Adult Failure to Thrive (AFTT)

The condition known as adult failure to thrive or AFTT refers to an overall decline in the ability to function. AFTT often develops in older adults following a long period of illness, such as cancer, or after an extended hospitalization. Common causes of the disorder include:

  • Functional impairments
  • Chronic infection or disease
  • Having multiple chronic conditions
  • Psychiatric disorders associated with cognitive loss
  • Suffering from a stroke

Some of the major signs that an individual has developed AFTT include increasingly poor nutrition and weight loss, as well as inactivity and depression. Additionally, the ability to function independently decreases so that an individual with the condition might experience a wide range of challenges, such as frequently falling or difficulty getting up and down stairs. Patients with AFTT tend to walk less, as well as demonstrate less general mobility.
