Irregular Bleeding: FAQs

If you are suffering from irregular bleeding in Ridgewood, and Bayonne, NJ, you know how disruptive it can be. Dr. Eric Bentolila and Dr. Jacqueline Saitta offer a full array of obstetric and gynecology services at their practice.

What Makes Bleeding Irregular?

Irregular bleeding is abnormal bleeding. A normal female period can last up to seven days and the menstrual cycle is between 21 and 35 days. When your period lasts longer than 7 days, that is irregular. If your cycle isn't within 21-35 days, that is irregular. Spotting between periods or after sex is irregular bleeding. If you have exceptionally heavy bleeding, that is irregular.

What Causes Abnormal Periods?

Many things can cause abnormal periods. Growth in your uterus, including fibroid tumors or polyps, can cause period irregularities. If your hormones are out of balance, it can cause period issues. Having an eating disorder or exercising to an extreme level, can affect your period. When you have a sexually transmitted disease or polycystic ovary syndrome, these can affect your normal period.

What Is Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

Heavy menstrual bleeding is called menorrhagia. When you suffer from this condition, you need to change your pad or tampon more than once an hour. You may have to resort to using both a tampon and a pad. You pass large clots of blood, and you have to restrict your activities because of the amount of bleeding you have. Basically, if your bleeding is heavy enough to cause disruptions to your life, it is a problem.

Does Perimenopause Cause Irregular Bleeding?

Perimenopause usually happens somewhere around the age of 50, and it is common for periods to either last longer and be heavier or to skip a month. This is a time of life when irregular bleeding becomes the norm.

What Can Be Done About Irregular Bleeding?

Irregular bleeding is very treatable. Your gynecologist has many options to offer depending on what the cause of your bleeding is. If you are finished having children, endometrial ablation can be the cure you are looking for. For some women, having an IUD or using birth control pills can help with bleeding irregularities. Hormone replacement therapy is also an option.  Sitting down with your doctor for a discussion will provide you with the information and options that work best for you.
