What Is A Balloon Sinuplasty?

A balloon Sinuplasty is an endoscopic or minimally invasive procedure used to drain the major nasal sinuses. Performed by an ENT, tiny balloons dilate the nasal cavities to drain them. The method used is similar to an angioplasty, where balloon catheters dilate congested blood vessels.

The patient is numbed during the procedure to ease any discomfort. A slim catheter with a deflated balloon attached is inserted through the nose to reach the sinus cavities. When the balloons inflate, the nasal cavities dilate and a saline flushing solution is used to help drain the sinuses. They can continue to drain once the balloons are removed.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and you should be able to resume normal activities within a couple of days. Some patients start to feel the effects of the procedure almost immediately. You should avoid blowing your nose for 24 hours and may have some excess drainage after the procedure.
