Detailed Physical Examination

As a new parent, you are likely nervous about your baby’s first appointment with the pediatrician. You can alleviate some of your anxiety by learning more about what the process entails.

More often than not, the appointment begins with a thorough physical examination.

The pediatrician may start by weighing your infant. After that, they will measure your baby’s height along with the circumference of their head and abdomen. Your pediatrician will note all those measurements and refer to them during future exams so they can monitor the growth of your baby.

Once the initial measurements are complete, the pediatrician can move on to examining specific parts of your infant’s body. They will examine your baby’s head for soft spots and then turn their attention to the eyes, ears, and mouth to check if everything is in order. The pediatrician will also examine your baby’s heart, genitalia, hips, and skin.

If the pediatrician spots any abnormalities during the examination, they can tell you about them immediately. Let Pediatric & Adolescent Care, in Gaithersburg, MD handle the newborn care exam so you can rest assured that it will be done properly.

A Conversation with Your Pediatrician

Your appointment with the pediatrician doesn’t end with the completion of your newborn’s physical exam. The next segment of your appointment is just as important because it will help both you and the pediatrician better understand the current condition of your baby.

With the exam out of the way, you can now have a conversation with your pediatrician.

The pediatrician will likely ask about your baby’s feeding, sleeping, and diaper habits. Note them before your appointment so you can relay accurate information to the pediatrician.

You can also expect them to ask about your baby’s level of activity. Describe what a typical day is like with your baby. Mention any new developments you’ve noticed and ask about what they mean.

Don’t hesitate to mention any details you recall about your baby because they could contain valuable information. You can also ask about your baby’s growth after the pediatrician is done analyzing the results of the physical exam.
