What is Neuroma and How Is It Treated?

When you are standing, do you sometimes feel as if you are standing on a sharp rock? Do you feel the pain on the ball of your foot? If so, neuromait might be time to see your podiatrist, Dr. Michael Mitry at Advanced Podiatry of Needham in Needham, Massachusetts. He can help you deal with the pain of foot neuroma.

Neuroma is the result of thickening tissue around one of the nerves in your foot, putting pressure on the nerve. The pain can be sharp and burning, and you may feel numbness, stinging or burning in your toes.

According to the Mayo Clinic, you are at higher risk for foot neuroma if you wear high-heeled or tight shoes. You can also be at greater risk if you are a runner or wear tight athletic foot gear, as you would for rock climbing or snow skiing. Certain foot problems, like bunions, high arches, flatfeet, or hammertoes, can put you at higher risk too.

There are some things you can do at home to relieve neuroma and allow the nerve to heal. Dr. Mitry would like you to try:

  • Changing your shoes to a shoe with a wider toe area and not wearing high heels
  • Taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or naproxen to relieve your pain and reduce swelling
  • Icing the bottom of your foot
  • Reducing high impact activities and giving your feet a rest

If you continue to have problems with neuroma, it’s time to visit your Needham podiatrist. He can prescribe several treatments for relief of neuroma starting with conservative treatments including custom arch supports, inserts and foot pads. He may also recommend corticosteroid injections to decrease swelling and inflammation. For more advanced cases, Dr. Mitry may recommend surgical treatment.

If you think you may be suffering from neuroma, you don’t have to just try and deal with it. Help is just a phone call away.
