Are Bunions Causing You Pain?

If bunions are causing you pain, we can help. Irritation and discomfort often occur as the interior of the shoes rubs against the bunions throughout the day. Several options are available for treating bunions and the pain they cause. A podiatrist can recommend a specific treatment for you. In Needham, MA, bunions are treated at Advanced Podiatry of Needham, where Dr. Michael Mitry and Dr. Christopher Karter can help you find relief from bunion pain.

What Causes Bunions?

A common cause of bunions is a dislocated metatarsophalangeal toe joint. The metatarsophalangeal joint is located at the base of the big toe and connects the toe to the foot. When the joint is out of place, the big toe slants toward the smaller ones. This causes the bony end of the metatarsophalangeal joint to slant in the opposite direction and press against the side of the foot, forming a hard bump or bunion.

Several factors can result in the metatarsophalangeal joint slipping out of place. Wearing shoes that are too narrow or tight and cramp the toes can lead to dislocation of the joint and the development of bunions. Other causes include a foot injury or deformity, as well as arthritis or another medical condition.

Bunion Treatments

Once bunions form, they will not go away on their own so it is important to speak with a podiatrist about treatment options. We utilize several methods for treating bunions at our Needham, MA, podiatry office. Treatments include:

  • Switching to footwear designed with enough room to accommodate the bunion and not irritate it
  • Using protective padding inside shoes to reduce friction and alleviate inflammation
  • Wearing orthotic devices to correct foot positioning and stabilize the toe joint
  • Performing special foot exercises to prevent stiffness and improve joint mobility and function
  • Wearing splints on the feet when sleeping to realign the toe joint
  • Removing calluses or corns on the feet

If more conservative methods have not provided sufficient relief from bunion discomfort, surgical treatment might be the next step. Bunions surgery, often referred to as a bunionectomy, can be performed to realign the toe joint and remove the bunion.

You do not need to suffer with pain and discomfort caused by bunions. Many effective treatment options are available. For the treatment of bunions in Needham, MA, schedule an appointment with Dr. Mitry or Dr. Karter by calling Advanced Podiatry of Needham at (781) 444-4044.
