Scaling and Root Planing Preserves Your Teeth

Learn how scaling and root planing can help break the cycle of periodontitis.

If your Decatur dentist has diagnosed you with periodontal disease, you may feel a little concerned about the prognosis. While Scaling and Root Planingperiodontitis is a chronic inflammatory gum disease, it is treatable through a series of deep cleaning procedures at Corley Family Dental, a general dentistry practice in Decatur, Illinois. These treatments, called scaling and root planing, combat the infection and rehabilitate the gum tissue.

What is scaling and root planing?

Calculus, which is solidified plaque, is what causes periodontitis. Normal brushing and flossing can't effectively remove the calculus. Scaling and root planing, which skilled dental hygienists perform at Drs. Chad and Natalie Corley's office, is the best technique for breaking up the bacteria and clearing away the calculus. A handheld tool, called a scaler, removes it from the surface of the teeth and away from the gums. Local anesthesia can be administered by your Decatur general dentist if the gum tissue is particularly inflamed. Several appointments may be required to concentrate on one area of the mouth at a time.

What is the aftercare?

Dr. Chad Corley or Dr. Natalie Corley may prescribe doxycycline for you. This is a mild antibiotic that inhibits bone and tissue loss and cuts back on inflammation. A prescription mouthwash may be used in tandem; it contains antibacterial agents and helps soothe the gums.

Are there preventative measures?

If you've already been diagnosed with periodontitis, you're at a higher risk for reinfection. With strict dental hygiene, you can help keep the disease-causing bacteria down. This includes daily gentle brushing with a hydrogen peroxide solution. This and rinsing with the same solution will reduce bacteria. Eat healthfully as well; stay away from refined sugar but get plenty of Vitamin C and Omega 3s for healthy tissue growth. These foods include broccoli, kale, citrus fruits, tuna, salmon, and eggs.
