Common Foot Issues And How We Can Help

Do you suffer from foot pain or other foot problem? Stamford, CT, podiatrist Dr. Peter Siroka discusses common foot issues, including foot issuesbunions and ingrown toenails, and explains what can be done to treat them.

Bunions

That painful bump at the base of your toe won't go away on its own, but you can do some things to keep it from getting worse. Because bunions form when the bones in your foot are misaligned, realigning the foot can be helpful. Surgical realignment is needed in some cases, but you may also benefit from wearing night splints or prescription orthotics. Avoiding high heels and tight shoes will reduce pressure on the bunion.

Ingrown toenails

Ingrown toenails tend to occur if you don't cut your toenails straight across or you wear tight shoes or socks that force the edge of the nail into the surrounding skin. If you notice the problem, soak your toe in warm water for 10 or 15 minutes, then try to free the trapped edge by placing a small piece of cotton underneath. If you can't free the nail, make an appointment at our Stamford office. Treatments for ingrown toenails range from removing the trapped edge to removing the entire nail if you frequently experience the problem.

Diabetic foot problems

People who have diabetes are at increased risk of developing infections because high blood sugar levels slow healing. Even minor foot issues, such as ingrown toenails or burst blisters, can quickly turn into infections that may make amputation a necessity. Visiting a podiatrist if you have an ingrown toenail, infected blister, open sore, changes in skin color or sensation, or any other foot problem will help you ensure that your feet remain healthy.

Fungus

Fungal infections can turn your toenails yellow and cause athlete's foot. Over-the-counter products can be helpful if the infection is mild. More severe infections may require prescription medications or other treatments, such as laser therapy to kill the fungus that causes yellow toenails.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. The problem occurs due to an inflammation of the tough band of tissue that connects your toes to your heel. Night splints, cushioning heel pads and exercises can reduce pain, but surgery may be needed if those methods don't help.
