What Foot Problems Do Podiatrists Treat?

What Foot Problems Do Podiatrists Treat?

Our feet hold the pressure of everything we do throughout the day. Our work, habits, and shoes all have a direct impact on how much these things hurt our feet. Some problems are minor and can be handled from home, while others warrant seeing a foot doctor. Dr. Anam Ali and Dr. Mukesh Bhakta, of Prince William Foot & Ankle Center, are here to help you find out how a podiatrist can help with your foot problems.

What Foot Problems Do Podiatrists Treat?

There are several problems that your feet can develop, be it through genetics, accidents, or general wear-and-tear over time. Podiatrists specialize in the musculoskeletal system, giving them experience in handling the bone, muscle, and moving parts of the feet. The most common of these foot problems can include:

Heel Pain

Heel pain is usually due to being on your feet for extended periods of time. Standing in one place for too long, especially on concrete surfaces, can make this worse. Carrying heavy loads also exacerbates the problem.

If your workplace requires that you stand for lengthy periods of time, you will want to choose the most comfortable, best-fitting shoes possible. Add inserts or our custom orthotics for any needed comfort and support that the shoes do not provide.

Alternating your weight between left and right feet, rather than leaving all of the weight on both, helps to delay overuse.

Foot and Ankle Injuries

Specializing in the moving parts of the foot, podiatrists are excellent resources for physical therapy and the recovery of strength and mobility after an injury.

Many athletes regularly see a foot doctor for therapeutic exercises to prevent injuries

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails tend to happen when toenails are not trimmed, are cut too short, or the toes of your shoes are too tight.

If this is beginning to form, immediately start wearing loose shoes that can permit the toenail to get back on its natural track. If the nail still grows inward or shows signs of infection, it is important to see the foot doctor. In addition to fixing an ingrown nail, our office offers laser treatment that can help prevent the recurrence of ingrown toenails in the future.
