Diaper Rash

Diaper rashes are common in infants and can have various causes. For a mild rash, the most common cause is irritation caused by a wet diaper. This can be helped with careful cleansing when changing wet diapers and using Desitin ointment, A&D ointment, or Dr. Smith's diaper rash ointment as needed.

Infants can also become irritated in the diaper area when having diarrhea because of the contact with the skin with multiple loose stools. If you notice this is beginning to occur, a thicker cream such as zinc oxide or one of the thick white ointments are more protective and should be used (See Yeast Infections).
Call the office if the rash develops red streaks, excoriating skin or pustules.
