What To Expect From a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is not just for acne, as many people assume. It can improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, scarring, sun damage, and more. Our team of dermatologists from Affiliated Dermatologists provides several skin cosmetic procedures in Mt. Arlington, Bridgewater, and Morristown, NJ. Chemical peels are one of our more popular cosmetic treatments.

What Is a Chemical Peel?

This procedure involves applying chemicals to the surface of your skin which dissolves the outermost layer. Over the next few days, this outer layer of skin peels away and reveals fresher, brighter, and younger-looking skin.

How Do I Prepare for a Chemical Peel?

We recommend certain preparatory actions in the days leading up to our skin cosmetic procedures in Morristown, NJ. These include:

  1. Refrain from using at-home exfoliant treatments. The chemicals used in at-home treatments may not play well with the chemicals in your chemical peel treatment. They may cause a reaction that ultimately causes more damage.
  2. Staying as hydrated as possible.
  3. Skip the gym. This is only important on the morning of your procedure. The dramatic increase in circulation leaves your skin overstimulated.
  4. Lastly, planning is key. Schedule the procedure for several weeks before an upcoming event to allow time for adequate healing of your skin.

What Is the Procedure Like?

This procedure itself is simple and causes minimal discomfort. First, your skin is thoroughly cleaned using a special prep solution, removing surface oils and allowing for your chemical peel to penetrate the skin evenly. Next, the chemical peel solution is applied. There are several solutions to choose from categorized by how deeply they penetrate the skin. Your dermatologist will guide you in choosing the best one for your skin.

The peel remains on your skin for several minutes. You may experience mild tingling or burning during this time. The chemicals react with your skin, allowing for the emergence of fresh skin.

What Should I Expect After the Procedure and What Are Some Aftercare Requirements?

For the first 2 to 3 days after your procedure, your skin looks and feels the most intense. Depending on the type of peel used, you can expect redness and sensitivity similar to sunburn in the days following the procedure. When the redness fades, your skin will begin to peel, like a peeling sunburn. Avoid the sun and apply a high SPF sunblock whenever you go out. Adequate hydration and use gentle, hydrating facial cleansers that contain hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
