Give Damaged Teeth A Second Chance

A damaged tooth could find a second chance at life with a dental crown.

You are ready to hit the field. You have your gear on, you’ve warmed up and now you are ready to play some football. There is just onedental crowns rather big issue: you didn’t put in your mouthguard. Maybe you never wear a mouthguard or you don’t think you need one but once you get knocked in the mouth you suddenly realize why it is so important to protect your teeth. If you have a cracked, broken or fractured tooth our Colorado Springs dentist Dr. Nolan Behr can restore your tooth with a dental crown.

What is a dental crown and what is its purpose?

Whether you’ve heard someone call it a crown or a cap, this hollow restoration is an artificial tooth that is placed over the entire visible portion of a tooth that has been damaged or has had extensive decay. The purpose of the crown is to protect the weakened tooth from sustaining further damage. Of course, there are other situations in which our Colorado Springs, CO general dentist may also recommend getting a dental crown:

  • To cover a malformed, misshapen or unsightly tooth to improve its appearance
  • To support a dental bridge (which is used to replace one or more missing teeth in a row)
  • To cover a dental implant to replace a missing tooth

How do I get a crown?

The first thing you will do is come into our office for a consultation. We will examine the problem tooth or teeth to determine if a crown is the right restoration. If we do decide that a crown could improve the health of your smile, these are some of the steps you will go through to get a dental crown in Colorado Springs:

  • A local anesthetic is administered.
  • We prepare the tooth to make room for the dental crown.
  • We then take impressions of the prepared tooth. These impressions are sent to an outside lab so they can use it to create a properly fitted crown.
  • In the meantime, we will place a temporary crown over the prepared tooth to protect it.
  • Once your permanent crown is ready we will remove the temporary one and then check the bite, fit, shape and color of the crown. If everything looks great, we will go ahead and cement the crown in place.

Don’t let damaged teeth ruin the health of your smile. It’s a simple fix with dental crowns. Call our Colorado Springs dental office today to schedule your next appointment and find out if dental crowns are right for you.
