Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month®
May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month® sponsored by the AAD. It kicks off with Melanoma Monday®, which is the first Monday in May 4, 2020. Due to COVID-19 Melanoma Monday will be a bit different this year. Most years there are numerous, large skin cancer screenings available. This years many states are not yet allowing such gatherings of people due to stay at home orders. Many are only allowing emergency medical care. Nonetheless, it is important to continue to educate far and wide about this deadly skin cancer. Early detection and treatment can be life saving. When treated early the 5 year survival rate is 98%.
Melanoma comes from moles" . The vast majority of moles are visible on the skin, and brown in color. Rarely, moles may be pink or red,
Fortunately, moles don't change into Melanoma overnight. Gradually moles will go through a series of changes (some faster than others) known as dysplasia. The greater the degree of dysplasia, the more likely the mole may turn into melanoma. It is important to recognize the ABC’s of melanoma because having changes features of moles can prompt a visit to your dermatologist sooner than your next scheduled appointment.
A: Asymmetry. Half of the mole is not the mirror image of the other half.
B: Border. The margins should be smooth, without irregularity
C. Color. very dark color, black, or variations of red white and blue
D: Diameter. The size of the mole should not be more than 6mm measured across the mole. This is the size of a pencil eraser.
E: Evolution/changes - Any changes over time in size, shape, symptoms (itching, tenderness), surface (bleeding, scaling, inflammation), and shades of color.
Other signs to pay close attention to include rapid mole growth, formation of a sore, and itching or bleeding within the mole.
The above signs and symptoms do not automatically mean the mole is malignant or even dysplastic. But, these are definitely a reason to seek out a dermatology evaluation.
Melanoma Monday is also a time to stress the importance of skin cancer prevention. Physicians are attuned to the role that both sun and tanning beds play in the formation of skin cancer, including melanoma. Wear your Sun Block!
If you have a mole that could be a melanoma, at a minimum, you should get a telemedicine/ virtual visit to have it checked out and, from there, scheduled for an in office biopsy if needed.
