Developing A Good Oral Care Routine

Developing a good oral care routine at home can help you maintain your dental health and prevent you from getting gum disease and tooth decay. Having regular dental check-ups is an important part of your oral care routine. Dr. Jeffrey Pike is a dentist at the Scarsdale Dentist in Scarsdale, NY. He has been treating Scarsdale residents for more than 30 years.

The Four Rules of Good Oral Care

Dr. Pike recommends you follow these principles to protect your oral health:

  • Spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth, once in the morning and once in the evening. Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth.
  • Floss your teeth at least once a day with nylon floss, floss picks, or a water flosser.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste that has been approved by the ADA.
  • Visit your dentist every six months for a check-up and professional cleaning.

Consequences of Improper Oral Care

Failing to maintain a good oral hygiene routine can result in the following:

  • Gingivitis: Caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth and around the gum line gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease. It can cause inflamed gums that may bleed when you brush or floss.
  • Periodontitis: This is the more severe stage of gum disease, which arises if you do not get treatment for gingivitis. The symptoms of periodontitis include receding gums and damage to the connective tissue and bones surrounding the teeth. It can eventually lead to tooth loss.

If you are noticing signs of gingivitis, you should work to establish a good oral care routine as soon as possible. Later stages of periodontitis may not be reversible or more difficult to treat.
