FAQs About IUDs

Learn more about this popular birth control option.

Today, there are certainly far more contraceptive options than ever before. We can choose from pills, a patch, a ring, an injection, a subdermal implant or an intrauterine device (IUD). These days, the IUD has become one of the most popular contraceptive options our Annapolis, MD, OBGYN Dr. Lori Sweitzer and the Capital Women’s Care team offer. Here’s what you should know:

What Is an IUD?

This tiny, flexible plastic T-shaped device is temporarily inserted into the uterus by our Annapolis, MD, OBGYN. There are two main types of IUDs: hormonal and copper. The hormonal IUD may be recommended if you are dealing with severe PMS-related cramping or heavy periods, as this form of contraception can improve cramping and pain and lighten periods.

A hormonal IUD may also help those with endometriosis or PCOS. The copper IUD does not contain hormones, which may be a better option for someone looking to avoid hormonal forms of birth control.

Is the IUD Reversible?

You had the IUD inserted, but maybe you and your partner want to start a family. No problem! Just because an IUD is designed to last several years doesn’t mean that you can’t come into our office and have it removed whenever you want. This birth control method is reversible.

How Long Can an IUD Stay in the Uterus?

Hormonal IUDs can last up to seven years before needing to be replaced while copper IUDs can protect against pregnancy for up to 10 years.

Is the Insertion of the IUD Painful?

The placement of an IUD only takes a few minutes and can be placed anytime during your menstrual cycle. You’ll come into our office, where we will use a speculum to open up the vagina and then use a special device that helps guide the IUD through the cervix and into the uterus. It usually takes less than five minutes to place the IUD, but some individuals experience cramps or pain with the insertion process. If you are concerned about pain, please don’t hesitate to speak with us beforehand. We can discuss pain management options with us.

What Are the Side Effects Associated With Having an IUD?

There is a lower risk for side effects with an IUD, which is why many individuals choose this contraception. Since the IUD is placed into the uterus, the side effects are more concentrated in that area and are less likely to go into the bloodstream. It’s normal for there to be some cramping after the IUD has been inserted.

How Effective Are IUDs?

IUDs are one of the most effective forms of contraception available, with about a 99% success rate.
