We Offer Vision and Hearing Services

Dr. Ceyhun "Jay" Ozturk and Dr. Maria Guerra are here for you at Little Oaks Pediatrics in Raleigh, NC, for your vision and hearing screening needs.

Why does my child need a screening?

Children and adolescents should be screened for vision and hearing issues every year as part of their checkup appointment. This is an opportunity for your provider to assess if your child has a vision or hearing problem. An untreated vision problem or hearing impairment can be very detrimental to a child's development, and these screenings prevent further and more serious issues. Contact the pediatricians at Little Oaks Pediatrics in Raleigh, NC, if you're concerned about your child's hearing or vision.

What is the pediatrician looking for?

Common eye conditions in children include nearsightedness, lazy eye, and misalignment of the eyes. When left untreated, these conditions create further complications later in life. We screen for these issues and more at a routine vision screening.

Newborns typically have blurry vision, but as their vision develops you want to screen for possible issues. Vision screenings start with an exam of the eyes themselves, and a series of tests for the eyes. For newborns, these are simple blink and pupil response tests. As a child gets older and can read a vision chart, we test the sharpness of their vision.

Most newborns have their first hearing screening in the hospital, shortly after birth. It's important to continue with regular screenings because a hearing impairment can impede a child's development in many ways, including language and speech development. Older children are screened with a pure-tone test, which involves wearing headphones and indicating when you hear beeps.

What happens if the pediatrician finds something?

If a screening shows a possible vision or hearing problem, the child will be referred to either an ophthalmologist or audiologist for a full evaluation. Begin treatment for any issue your doctor finds as soon as possible to prevent further complications. Screenings are an important preventative measure and should be conducted for your child every year.
