What to Expect During a Sports Physical for Children

If your child has begun to play sports or participate in physical activities, you might have been told to schedule a sports physical exam.  Unlike your child’s annual wellness visit, sports physicals are performed to ensure that your child is healthy and physically fit to perform an activity.  At Southwest Children's Clinic in West Jordan, UT, we are pleased to prepare you and your child for all of their sports-related and physical activities.

What is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical is an exam performed aside from your child’s regular wellness exam, focusing on their ability to participate in an activity safely.  This exam typically takes place at your child’s pediatric office and should be done about 6 weeks prior to the start of the sport or activity to allow time for any treatments if necessary.

Why Does My Child Need a Sports Physical?

Many schools and sports associations require sports physicals as a part of the registration process.  It prepares your child for activity and guides coaches and teachers in ways to help your child succeed.  A sports physical can prevent potential injury during the activity by identifying any weaknesses or ailments your child has and gives you the opportunity to create a plan to overcome any obstacles.

What Happens During the Exam?

During the appointment with Southwest Children’s Clinic in West Jordan, UT, the doctor will go over your child’s medical history and discuss anything that might interfere with physical activity.  Some common questions that are asked pertain to:

  • Allergies
  • Previous/ongoing injury
  • Familial medical history
  • Current medications
  • Sexual development

Next, a physical exam is performed.  Your child will likely have these items checked:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Height and weight
  • Heart and lungs
  • Muscles and joints

What Happens After the Exam?

Once your child’s doctor has performed the exam, the office will provide a form that notates whether your child is fit for activity, which should be given to the school or sports administrator.  A sports physical form is good for one year.

Just as annual wellness exams are important for your child, sports physicals are necessary to ensure their safety and health during activities.  Southwest Children’s Clinic in West Jordan, UT,  is ready to prepare your child for success. To schedule your appointment, please call (801) 563-1975.
