Care of newborns in the first month

Congratulations on your new arrival

Here are some tips for caring for your newborn during their first month:

  1. Feeding: Whether you choose to breastfeed or formula feed, your newborn will need to eat every 2-3 hours. Follow your baby's hunger cues, such as smacking their lips or rooting around for the breast. Make sure to burp your baby after each feeding.

  2. Diapering: Your newborn will go through a lot of diapers! Change their diaper every 2-3 hours or as needed. Make sure to clean your baby's diaper area thoroughly with wipes or a damp cloth and apply diaper cream to prevent diaper rash.

  3. Sleeping: Newborns sleep a lot - up to 16-17 hours a day! Make sure your baby sleeps on their back in a crib or bassinet with a firm mattress and a fitted sheet. Keep the room at a comfortable temperature and avoid blankets, pillows, and other loose items in the crib.

  4. Bathing: You don't need to bathe your newborn every day - 2-3 times a week is sufficient. Use a mild, fragrance-free soap and warm water to gently wash your baby. Make sure to support your baby's head and neck during the bath.

  5. Bonding: Spending time holding and cuddling your baby is important for bonding and attachment. Talk and sing to your baby, and try skin-to-skin contact. Don't be afraid to ask for help or support if you need it - caring for a newborn can be exhausting!

Remember, every baby is different, and there's no one "right" way to care for a newborn. Trust your instincts and don't be afraid to ask for advice or help from your healthcare provider, family, or friends.
