In addition to Southfield, the doctors also have offices in Livonia, Novi, and Howell, MI.

Get Regular Colorectal Screenings

It takes polyps from 10 to 15 years to turn from non-cancerous to cancerous, so it makes sense that with regular screenings every 10 years, starting at age 45, any polyps can be detected early. Several different types of tests are available, and you should discuss with your gastroenterologist what is the best one for you. You should also discuss your family history especially if it includes colon cancer.

Diet, Activity, and Weight

Being overweight increases the risk of colon cancer, it affects both men and women, but the link appears to be stronger in men. Maintaining a healthy weight may lower your risk. Physical activity may help prevent colon cancer in Southfield, MI. Try not to spend too much time lying down and sitting, get up and move around, and increasing your exercise is even better. Adding whole grains into your diet can help to lower your risk.

NSAIDs

Studies have shown that the use of NSAIDs can not only reduce inflammation, but it can reduce your risk of getting colon cancer. This includes aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen. These do however come with some side effects that need to be considered.

Smoking

Smoking has been shown to be a factor in the development of colon cancer.

Treatments

Treatment for colon cancer depends on what stage the cancer is when it is discovered. The earlier it is caught the less dramatic the treatment will be. In stage zero the treatment is to remove the cancer and that should be it. Only if the tumor is too large will there need for the removal of part of the colon. In Stage 1 the polyp will be removed and if needed part of the colon and nearby lymph nodes.

In Stage 2 colon cancer the treatment is the same as Stage 1 but may include chemotherapy. At Stages 3 and 4 of colon cancer, surgery, chemo, and radiation may be required.
