Diverticulitis is a condition patients often see us for because it causes severe abdominal pain. If you're having unexplained abdominal pain don't hesitate to come to see us.

What Is Diverticulitis?

Diverticula are small pouches that form in the lining of your digestive tract and bulge outward. When the pouches tear and become inflamed or infected, this is called diverticulitis. The pouches protruding is common especially as you age over 40, but many people are asymptomatic. Some people have diverticula but never develop symptoms of diverticulitis, so you may never even know you have them unless you have an attack.

An attack of diverticulitis causes severe pain in the abdomen, which will unfortunately but probably be your first sign of trouble. The pain can be more severe in the lower left side of the abdomen. Other symptoms can include fever, nausea, and changes in bowel habits, either constipation or diarrhea. Pain can last for several days, so don't hesitate to contact us and come see a doctor. Your doctor may perform other diagnostic tests to rule out other causes of pain.

How Is It Treated?

If you have diverticulitis, our dedicated physicians will determine the best method of treatment for you. Mild cases of diverticulitis can be effectively treated by diet changes and antibiotics. The most important thing will be adjusting your diet to your doctor's recommendations with plenty of liquids to prevent further symptoms or another attack while antibiotics work to kill the infection. Surgery for diverticulitis is typically only recommended in severe or recurring cases, so if you don't respond to other treatments there is still a more aggressive approach that can help.
