What Is Diverticulitis?
Diverticula are small pouches that form in the lining of your digestive tract and bulge outward. When the pouches tear and become inflamed or infected, this is called diverticulitis. The pouches protruding is common especially as you age over 40, but many people are asymptomatic. Some people have diverticula but never develop symptoms of diverticulitis, so you may never even know you have them unless you have an attack.
An attack of diverticulitis causes severe pain in the abdomen, which will unfortunately but probably be your first sign of trouble. The pain can be more severe in the lower left side of the abdomen.
