As you try to create a balanced diet for your child, the right nutrition guidance will help you get them on the right path with healthy eating. At Pediatric Associates of Wellesley, our providers in Medfield and Weston, MA, work with parents and their children to develop healthier eating habits. Even when your child is a picky eater, it is possible for them to get the nutrients they need to grow.
Proteins, fruit, vegetables, grains, and dairy are the building blocks of whole-body health. A balanced diet will include a variety of nutrients, even if your child struggles to eat a wide range of food items. You will want to choose a lean protein, such as poultry, eggs, nuts, or soy, to help your child meet protein requirements. Fruits can be frozen, canned, or fresh; just be sure they are not canned in heavy syrup. If the vegetables you’ve tried so far haven’t appealed to your child, try more colorful vegetables with a variety of dips.
Understand that creating a balanced diet is going to be a process. As you encourage your child to eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, you will also want to try limiting the amounts of sugar and saturated fat your child consumes. Think about what your child likes to eat, and find ways to make the food a bit healthier. Substitute whole grains when you can, and add blended vegetables to sauces if your child won't eat vegetables whole.
