What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium metal screw or cylinder that is placed into the patient's jaw bone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once the screw has naturally fused with the bone, a metal post and porcelain crown are placed atop of it, completing the brand-new replacement tooth.

How long will my implants last?

Dental implants can last 25 years or longer, according to the Columbia University School of Dental Medicine. However, the exact duration depends on your oral and systemic health, the quality of the supportive bone that you have in your jaw, and how well you attend to them with diligent brushing, flossing, and routine in-office care with Dr. Yasuhara. A pre-qualifying examination/X-ray screening at our Honolulu office tells the dentist if you're a good implant candidate.

I wear dentures. Can implants help me?

Yes, they can. Depending on their location on the upper or lower arches, multiple dental implants can support fixed bridges or complete dentures.

Why are dental implants so stable?

Think of conventional tooth replacements. They either clasp to adjoining teeth or rest on top of gums and bone. Conversely, dental implants bond with the jaw bone through what scientists call osseointegration. Human bone cells have a great affinity for titanium metal. As such, they adhere to the implant and anchor it so well that these artificial teeth are just as stable and functional as their natural counterparts.
