How Often Should You Visit Your OBGYN?

The gynecological team at StorkGYN in Houston, TX is dedicated to women’s health and ensuring women of all ages receive the treatment and care they need.

How Often Should You Visit Your OBGYN?

To provide the best preventative care by an OBGYN, a comprehensive health exam conducted at least once a year is recommended for women of all ages. An annual checkup with Dr. Denise Leonard, the StorkGYN physician in Houston, TX, will include a physical exam, pap smear, and blood work. Visiting Dr. Leonard, at least once annually, will keep patients updated on their health status and help catch any problems early.

Once women reach the age of 40, a yearly mammogram will also be conducted.

When Should You Schedule Your First Visit With a Gynecologist?

Determining the right time for young women to visit an OBGYN for the first time can vary from person to person. However, the first visit to a gynecologist should happen before a woman becomes sexually active. Once a woman turns 21, it is recommended women begin seeing an OBGYN at least once a year for a preventative health exam and regular pap smears.

It is recommended that women between the ages of 11 and 18 should only see a gynecologist if any changes occur in menstruation, delayed puberty or they become sexually active. Until the age of 21, young women can continue to see their pediatrician regularly for an annual health exam, unless concerns arise regarding the female reproductive system.

When Should I Make an Appointment Outside of My Annual Exam?

Additional problems can arise before or after a scheduled annual preventative health exam. If any of the following problems or concerns should arise, call the StorkGYN office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Leonard:

  • Learning about birth control options
  • Confirming a pregnancy
  • Discussing any menstrual problems or menopause
  • Checking breasts for tender areas or suspected lumps
  • Concerns regarding vaginal discomfort, discharge, redness, or irritation
  • Concerns about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse
